The Vaisala WXT510 sensor is provided with a factory calibration certificate, but, as with any precision weather instrument, it is recommended that the system be calibrated at yearly intervals. EnviroMon can provide this service, either by on-site calibrations or workshop calibration at our Somerset West offices. Calibrations are performed by comparing the sensor readings to reference sensors (All with valid calibration certificates).

Description of the system:

The Vaisala all weather sensor is mounted on a 2 m mast (or higher, depending on requirements) with a SDI-12 cable connection (15 m) to a Campbell Scientific CR200 data logger. The data logger is housed in an IP65 weatherproof enclosure. The Vaisala WXT510 sensor has no moving parts - wind direction and wind speed are measured ultrasonically, rainfall is measured by means of a pressure sensitive plate, barometric pressure, air temperature and relative humidity are measured by sensors located in a radiation shield. The rainfall pressure plate can determine rainfall intensity and duration, as well as the rainfall amount. Hail intensity and duration may also be measured.

The Vaisala sensor is powered by 12V DC from the data logger, through the same cable connection as the SDI-12 interface. Due to the method of data transmission (SDI-12, or alternatively RS232/422), the readings are not affected by cable resistance etc. A backup battery will provide power to the system for at least 14 days in the event of a power failure. The data logger has a built in charger/regulator which charges the battery from a 17V DC power source.

The CR200 data logger is fully programmable, measurements may be taken and data stored at any storage interval from 1 second to 24 hours. Any calculations or offsets can be applied to the sensor data by logger programming. If extremely complex calculations or increased data storage capacity are required, the CR200 logger may be upgraded to a CR800 or CR1000 data logger, which have additional input channels as well as greater memory capacity.

The CR200 data logger is connected to a PC by means of a serial communication cable. The Loggernet software installed on the PC downloads data from the logger in real time or at pre-defined intervals. A real-time display can be run on the PC, which may be customised to user-requirements. The customised display can include real-time data, one minute or one hour averages etc, depending on the specific user requirements. The PC running the software can also act as a data server, which will enable any other PC on the network (which has the Loggernet Client software installed) to view the same real-time screen that is viewed on the server PC (provided that the Loggernet software is running and collecting data on the server PC).
